John asks…

What are good home remedies for toenail fungus?

Looking for natural treatments to use on toenail fungus.

Arline Burnett answers:

I cam across this, haven't (fortunately) had to use it but it is my understanding that even if you use a prescription product, it takes a while. You will need a few things: Vicks Vapor Rub, Rubbing alcohol, Band Aids, Q-tips, Nail File, Liquid Bleach and Tea Tree Oil-(if you can afford it) 1.Trim and file your infected nails as best as possible. Making them shorter and thinner is half the battle. 2.Wash toes with anti-bacterial soap in your morning shower. 3.Use a fresh towel or hair dryer on toes. (always use a clean towel) 4.With a Q-Tip, scrub in Rubbing Alcohol and let dry.(only takes a sec to dry) 5.With a Q-Tip, rub a generous amount of Vicks Vapor Rub on and around infected toenails and cover with a Band Aid. This will keep moisture from getting on and under the nail while at the same time killing the fungus. When you get home from work take off your shoes and socks and wash your feet in the same way. If you have Tea Tree Oil, apply it with a Q-Tip and walk bare foot as long as possible letting it dry. If you do NOT have Tea Tree Oil, mix Bleach and Water 50/50, apply it with a Q-Tip to the NAIL ONLY. Let it Dry. I do the same to my finger. Before bed, repeat steps 1-5 and wear clean socks to bed. After a few mornings you will have this down to about 5-10 minutes. I have been doing this for just a few weeks now and see about half the fungus gone. IT IS NOT AN OVERNIGHT CURE. It is however a REAL CURE. I will be seeing you all at the beach this coming summer :)

James asks…

Any home treatments for toenail fungus?

I don't want to see a doctor for this because i hear the treatment really messes with the liver (it doesn't need any thing else kickin at it). I just wanted to see if there are any home remedies.

Arline Burnett answers:

Take tea tree oil and menthol oil in a hot foot bath in a bowl. About 10 drops of each to about 3/4 gallon hot/warm water. Soak your feet twice a day. For 2 weeks. This will kill the fungis but it will take a while for the damage that has been done to grow out. While doing this mix a sulotion of tea tree and menthol in a spray bottle and spray your shoes ever time you take them off. Try going with out shoes as much as you can. Fungi love warm moist places like your shoes.

Laura asks…

I have a toenail fungus (onychomycosis) - how can I get rid of it?

I've had this for years on one of my big toes. It seems pretty mild as it doesn't cause any discomfort and hasn't spread, it just makes my toenail look white. However it started after I injured that toe - I dropped something heavy on it and it was bruised/bleeding underneath, I guess that's when the fungus invaded. I've recently injured the big toe on my other foot (out mountaineering) and am worried I'll get the fungus on that toe as well so I've decided to take measures to finally get rid of it! What can I do? I did go to the doctors once and got tablets that I took for 3 months that had no effect. The doctor was reluctant to give me more due to their potential adverse effects. I've seen other treatments - home remedies, creams, etc., but what is most effective? I had a look in my chemist and couldn't see anything. I've seen some stuff online but don't want to fork out money over the 'net for something that may not work. Any advice?

Check out the link below. Don't forget to consider what the cause might be - have your blood sugar levels checked... The incidence of onychomycosis has been increasing and is related to diabetes, a suppressed immune system, and increasing age.

How do I get rid of toenail fungus?

I have toenail fungus under two of the nails on one of my feet. The nail is raised, whitish yellow in color, and very thick. Lately it has become slightly painful as well. I have used an over the counter cream, but it did not help. I was wondering if anyone knows of any home remedies or over the counter treatments that actually do work. I am very self conscious of this.. and getting quite worried about the warm weather and open toe shoes. I do not have health insurance, and I can't really afford to go to the doctor. Any help that I can get would be great. Thanks.

Arline Burnett answers:

Sand the top with a nail file as much as you can.. Keep toenails trimmed short.. I tried a few things myself, can't really say if any of it worked.. Even painted my nails with bleach using a Q-tip.. I really think you just have 2 let the toenail grow out and that could take months.. I read on the comp just yesterday, it said soak your feet in equal parts water and apple cider vinegar 4 about 20 mins.. But now i don't know how often this should be done.. But that's all i know about toenail fungus.. Bummer eh ~
